Northern New York has a quiet, passionate pulse when it comes to the sports card and trading card game (TCG) hobby. From die-hard hockey fans tracking down the next great rookie card to Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering players battling it out at local game nights, the North Country hobby scene is thriving.

Whether you are unearthing vintage cards from your childhood attic, hunting for modern grails, or looking to cash in on your collection, here is your definitive guide to buying, selling, and trading sports cards and collectibles across the North Country.

1. Why the North Country is a Hidden Gem for Collectors

Geographically isolated between the Adirondacks and the Canadian border, the North Country has developed its own unique collecting culture. Because of our close proximity to Montreal and Ottawa, hockey is practically a religion here—meaning local collections often feature incredible vintage and modern NHL cardboard that you won’t easily find in downstate shops.

At the same time, the rise of brick-and-mortar storefronts and grassroots community events has transformed collecting from a solitary basement hobby into a vibrant, face-to-face community experience.

2. Where to Buy & Sell: Local Shops and Meetups

While online marketplaces like eBay and COMC have their place, nothing beats touching the cardboard, haggling face-to-face, and supporting local businesses right in our own backyard.

  • Brick-and-Mortar Hobby Shops:
    • Mahoney’s Local Card Shop: Located right on East Main Street in downtown Malone, Mahoney’s serves as a fantastic local hub for Franklin County collectors. Whether you’re hunting for sports card singles across all major leagues, sealed wax, or TCG favorites like Pokémon, stopping into the storefront is a great way to browse inventory in person.
    • Crossover Games: A stellar destination for local hobbyists that goes far beyond traditional tabletop gaming. In addition to deep TCG selections (Pokémon, MTG, One Piece), they have expanded to carry sports card sealed products and singles, making them a go-to brick-and-mortar spot for sports and trading card collectors alike.
  • Community Trade Nights:
    • Trading isn’t just for big conventions anymore. Local meetups—such as regional trade nights held at popular spots like the Adirondack Room at Mo’s Pub & Grill—offer a relaxed atmosphere to sling binders, trade raw cards, talk shop, and enjoy a night out without the pressure of a full convention floor.

3. The Power of Live Card Shows

If you want the ultimate buying and selling experience, regional card shows are where the magic happens.

  • The Malone Sports Cards & Collectibles Show: Hosting events right here in Malone (such as at the Malone Middle School gymnasium) brings together dozens of regional vendors, autograph guests (like former Montreal Canadiens fan-favorites such as Jimmy Mann), and hundreds of collectors under one roof. Plus, many of these local events give back directly to the community—such as raising funds for the Joint Council for Economic Opportunity (JCEO).
  • Expanding Your Radius: Don’t hesitate to hop on Route 11 or I-87 to check out neighboring shows, like the North Country Sports Cards and Collectibles Show down in Plattsburgh. Traveling to shows within a 1-to-2-hour radius opens up fresh inventory and introduces you to new regional dealers.

4. Tips for Buying, Selling, and Trading in Upstate NY

Whether you’re setting up a table as a vendor or walking the floor with a trade binder, keep these golden rules in mind:

  • Know Your Comps (Comparables): Always check recent sales on eBay (filtered by “Sold”) or secondary market apps before buying or selling a high-end card. Pricing can fluctuate quickly based on player performance or market trends.
  • Protect Your Assets: Northern New York weather can change on a dime. If you’re hauling inventory or high-end cards to a trade night or show, always use proper protection—penny sleeves, top loaders, semi-rigid holders (like Cardboard Gold or similar brands), or 130pt magnetic holders for thick patches and memorabilia cards. Keep your cards safe from moisture and temperature shifts.
  • Cash is King, But Trades Win: Many dealers are willing to cut a better deal if you have cash in hand, but the real fun of local shows is trading up. Bring a clean, organized binder of cards that match the vibe of the room (plenty of hockey, local sports stars, and popular TCG hits).
  • Build Relationships: The North Country hobby is built on trust and community. Introduce yourself to local shop owners, support the businesses that sponsor local events (like Malone Ford, Ward Lumber, and BCW Supplies), and treat fellow collectors with respect. A good reputation in the regional hobby goes a long way.

Get Involved!

The North Country collecting scene is only as strong as its community. Whether you’re dropping into Mahoney’s on Main Street, browsing the sports boxes at Crossover Games, looking for a local trade night, or planning to attend the next big show at malonecardshow.com, jump into the conversation, open your binders, and keep the hobby alive in Upstate New York!
